Public beaches near Amira District (and what to do if there is sargassum)
Much of Tulum's coast is taken by hotels and beach clubs, but there are free public accesses. Amira District sits on the same strip as Papaya Playa, with the beach within walking distance. These are the closest options, how to get there without a car, and what to do on days when the sea doesn't cooperate.
Free public accesses
Playa Conchitas · km 4.5
The closest public access to Amira District, on the same strip as Papaya Playa. No entrance fee and no minimum spend.
Playa del Pueblo · km 5.5
Another free public access, about one kilometre south of Conchitas.
Good to know
- You can bring your own cooler and food.
- Take your trash back with you.
- The accesses work during the day. Swim carefully and follow the flags.
The Jaguar Park beaches
Santa Fe, Pescadores, Maya and Mangle beaches are inside the park. The park entrance is free for Mexican visitors and MXN 100 for foreign visitors (2026 fee). Fees, hours and how to walk in through the south entrance are in the Jaguar Park guide.
Beach clubs
Papaya Playa is on the same strip as Amira District. It is a beach club with a minimum spend that changes by day and season, so ask when you book. If you only want sand and sea, the public accesses are free.
Getting there from Amira District
On foot or by bike. Parking near the beach is scarce, and Jaguar Park has no public parking: drivers have been asked to book at a restaurant or beach club.
If there is sargassum
Sargassum comes and goes and nobody can predict it: there is no fixed season, and it is not something we control. Check recent reports before your trip and on the day; the Quintana Roo government publishes a sargassum traffic-light map, and there are trackers with visitors' photos such as The Tulum Times.
On sargassum days, Tulum still has plenty to do:
- The cenotes, such as Gran Cenote on the road to Cobá.
- The jungle and Jaguar Park, right next to Amira District, with trails to walk or cycle.
- The Tulum ruins, inside the park.
- The rooftop pools at Amira District, if you stay there.
